Sutton House Society outing, Sunday 12th September 2004

Our Autumn outing will visit Hill House, Epping, a rarely accessible Tudor property.  Afterwards we shall take in a number of other interesting sites in Essex.

We shall depart from Sutton House at 10.00 am on 12th September, and expect to return to Sutton House at 5.00 pm.

We are booked in to Hill House for the 11.00 am tour as part of Open House Weekend.  Hill House is a Tudor courtyard house, now only open one weekend a year.  During its many changes in function (a bit like Sutton House with is multi-layered past) it was a prison.  Christine Keeler was one of its most infamous prisoners.  After a fire in 1969 the property fell into disrepair and in the 1990s it was converted into housing — a fate that Sutton House escaped!  We shall then go on to Greensted Church, Ongar, for lunch.  There is picnic space next to the church.  Then depending on the weather we shall visit either the Gardens of Eastern Lodge or the secret nuclear bunker at Kelvedon Hatch.  The Gardens of Eastern Lodge were designed by Harold Peto in 1902 for ‘Daisy’ Countess of Warwick, mistress of Edward VII.  The gardens were abandoned in 1950 but a restoration programme began in 1993.  Now there are an Italian garden, pavillion and glade to visit.  Kelvedon Hatch was built during the Cold War with rooms for the cabinet to shelter in.  Afterwards if we have time, we may be able to take in one or more of the nearby churches such as Ongar or Waltham Abbey.

Tickets are £8 for members and £10 for non-members.  This includes admission to Hill House.  Most other sites are free in any case, except the Gardens of Eastern Lodge which are £3.80 (£3.50 senior citizens).  Please bring your own picnic if you would like to eat in the open air; otherwise you can find yourself a suitable pub!

If you would like to come on the Autumn outing please return the booking slip enclosed.

Sutton House Annual Lecture, Thursday 14th October 2004

David Mander will be talking about the research that went into the production of the Tudor Hackney website, and new revelations about life in Tudor Hackney.

The lecture will take place 7.30 pm in the Wenlock Barn at Sutton House on Thursday 14th October.

Annual General Meeting, Thursday 18th November 2004

This takes place in the Wenlock Barn at Sutton House on Thursday 18th November at 7.30 pm.  This is your chance to vote for the committee.  If you wish to make any nominations to the committee please ensure that they are received by the committee (via Sutton House) at least 2 weeks before the meeting.

Launch of Sutton House Monograph, Wednesday 1st December 2004

The Monograph will be launched at Sutton House at 6.00 pm on Wednesday 1st December.  We shall have advance copies available at the Annual Lecture and the AGM, but this will be the official launch.  Further details will be in the next Sutton House Society newsletter.
